On May 19, 2016 - With a generous funding from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Al Azhar University-Gaza (AUG) inaugurated the farm of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment in Beit Hanoun.
The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Zakaria al-Agha, Representative of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Ms. Yuko Mitsui, Chief Representative of JICA in Palestine, Dr. Abul Rahman Hamad, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Abul Khaliq El Farra, President of AUG, Prof.Dr. Nasir Abu Foul, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, Mr. Sahir Younis, Director of JICA in Gaza and the faculty staff members and students.
The JICA-funded project aimed to reconstruct the farm which was completely destroyed in the latest Israeli aggression on Gaza in 2014.The project was the culmination of two phases. The first phase, in 2015, included establishing water well and main electrical board as well rehabilitating the farm's electricity feeding cables. In 2016, the second phase was implemented. Two greenhouses and a nursery were established. Furthermore, five dunams were cultivated with different varieties of grapes. The phase also included training courses in Global- G.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practices) held for the faculty's staff members and students.
After cutting the ribbon, the attendees made a tour in the farm to visit at the implemented projects.
