Child Labor Workshop

Feb 32, 2017 – In cooperation with the Legal Clinics at the Islamic University -Gaza and the University College of Applied Sciences , the Legal Clinic at the Faculty of Law concluded
" Child Labor" campaign by holding a final workshop.

Deans of law faculties from Gaza universities, representative of SAWASYA' program at UNDP, the legal clinics staff members at Gaza universities, and a number of lawyers dignitaries and decision-makers at local and government institutions attended the workshop.

Ms. Mai Shahwan, Coordinator at the Legal Clinic-AUG, talked about "Child Labor" campaign, conducted   within the joint activity of "New Visions for Legal Education Development" Project, implemented in partnership with 'SAWASYA' UNDP/UN Women Joint Program "Strengthening the role of law Justice and Security for Palestinian People." She went on to highlight the importance of addressing this phenomenon in the Gazan community.

In her remarks, Ms. Aya Abu Basheer, Coordinator of civil society institutions in SAWASYA Program at UNDP appreciated the great efforts of the legal clinics in AUG, the Islamic University-Gaza, and the University College of Applied Sciences, adding the significance of such events in highlighting means of protecting the children and providing them with a decent life.

Eng. Rami Ghboun, Coordinator of the legal clinic at the Islamic University, presented the campaign activities and objectives.

At the end, the attendees emerged with the following recommendations:

1.       To activate the role of the state through activating (i) the role of child protection mentoring program, (ii) child support fund, and (iii) the special laws on child protection.

2.        To amend the definition of "Night" so as not to indicate the rigid digital wording (from 8 pm to 6:00) but instead depends on sunset and sunrise.

3.       To form a committee to follow up on child protection.

4.       To promote education in not systematic ways.

5.       To invite relevant government institutions to follow-up its role

6.       To call the Legislative Council to activate its role in monitoring  the concerned ministries

7.       To call media to focus on this phenomenon.

8.       To activate the relevant laws

9.       To determine specific criteria to measure the success of these activities in addressing the phenomenon of child labor.
